About Flush Mount Ceiling Lights

A flush mount ceiling light sits tight against the ceiling, so it lights the whole room while taking only a few inches of headroom. That makes flush mount light fixtures the usual pick for rooms with ceilings under 8 ft, and for hallways, closets, bathrooms and bedrooms where a hanging light would be in the way. Picture an 8 ft hallway at night: a slim flush mount lights the path, and nobody tall brushes it on the way past. You'll find flush ceiling lights with built-in LEDs or bulb sockets, in drum, bowl, crystal and low profile styles.

Types of flush mount ceiling lights

  • LED Flush Mounts The LEDs are built in, so there's no bulb to buy or change. Many are slim, and some let you dim the light or change its color.
  • Drum Flush Mounts A round fabric or metal shade, usually with a diffuser underneath. The shade softens the light and spreads it evenly across a bedroom or living room.
  • Bowl Flush Mounts A glass bowl that hides the bulbs and glows from below. A simple choice for hallways, kitchens and laundry rooms.
  • Crystal Flush Mounts Crystals catch and scatter the light for some sparkle, without a hanging chandelier. Good for an entry or a dining room with a low ceiling.
  • Low Profile Flush Mounts Flat ceiling lights that sit only a few inches deep. Look for these when every inch of headroom counts, as in a basement or a hallway.
  • Semi-Flush Mounts These hang a few inches below the ceiling on a short stem, so light goes up onto the ceiling as well as down. They suit ceilings 9 ft and up, and 8 ft ceilings if the drop is about 10" or less.

How to choose a flush mount ceiling light

  • Ceiling height Under 8 ft, choose a flush mount. At 8 ft, either works; keep a semi-flush to a short drop of about 10" or less. At 9 ft and up, a semi-flush, pendant or chandelier fills the space better.
  • Size Add the room's length and width in feet; the total is about the fixture's width in inches. A 10 x 12 ft bedroom takes a fixture about 22" across. In a large or long room, use two lights. In a closet or half bath, a small ceiling light fixture about 10" to 12" across is usually enough.
  • Brightness For general light, plan about 10 to 20 lumens per square foot. Use the high end in kitchens and laundry rooms, and add under-cabinet or task light over the counter. Use the low end in bedrooms.
  • Light color 2700K reads warm, 3000K soft white, 4000K crisp. Keep the main lights in a room close in color temperature.
  • LED or bulb Integrated LEDs are rated for tens of thousands of hours. A fixture with sockets lets you choose the bulb; stay at or under the wattage on its label.
  • By room Over a tub or shower, choose a damp rated fixture, or wet rated where shower spray hits it. Hallway ceiling lights go about every 8 to 10 ft. In a dining room under 8 ft, or one that doubles as a walkway, a flush mount gives light without hanging in the way.

Ceiling light size chart

Room size Fixture width Light output
Hallway, 4 x 10 ft About 14"; one every 8 to 10 ft 400 to 800 lumens
Small bath or bedroom, 8 x 10 ft About 18" 800 to 1,600 lumens
Bedroom, 10 x 12 ft About 22" 1,200 to 2,400 lumens
Large bedroom or living room, 12 x 14 ft About 26", or two smaller lights 1,700 to 3,400 lumens
Long room, 12 x 20 ft Two lights, spaced evenly 2,400 to 4,800 lumens
Ceiling height Fixture Why
Under 8 ft Flush mount Keeps headroom clear
8 ft Flush mount or short semi-flush Semi-flush drop about 10" or less
9 ft and up Semi-flush, pendant or chandelier Fills the taller space

Flush mount specs explained

  • Diameter How wide the fixture is. Use the room-size rule above.
  • Height How far it sits below the ceiling. Low profile models are the smallest number here.
  • Damp or wet rating Damp rated handles bathroom humidity. Wet rated handles direct water.
  • Dimmable Dimming needs a dimmable fixture or bulb and a dimmer made for LEDs.
  • Installation A flush mount is hardwired and should be installed by an electrician.

Flush mount ceiling light questions

What's the difference between flush and semi-flush mount lights?

A flush mount sits right against the ceiling. A semi-flush hangs a few inches down on a short stem, which lets some light bounce off the ceiling. Ceiling height decides. Under 8 ft, choose flush. At 8 ft, either works if the semi-flush drops about 10" or less. At 9 ft and up, a semi-flush fills the space better.

Can I use a flush mount light in a dining room?

Yes, a flush mount works in a dining room, and it's the usual pick under 8 ft or when the room doubles as a walkway. Over the table itself, a chandelier or pendant hung about 30" to 36" above the tabletop also works, even under 8 ft, because nobody walks under it. A crystal or drum style gives the table a focal point. A dimmable fixture on a dimmer made for LEDs goes from homework light to dinner light.

What should I look for in a flush mount ceiling light for a bathroom?

Over a tub or shower, choose one that is at least damp rated, and wet rated if it sits where shower spray can reach. No pendant, chain-hung or cord-connected fixture, and no track lighting, should be within 3 ft of a tub or shower, up to 8 ft above the rim or threshold. That's one reason a flush mount is the usual choice there. Have an electrician install it.

What are the best hallway ceiling lights?

A flush mount or low profile light keeps the hall clear for tall people and doors. Plan one about every 8 to 10 ft in a long hall. A small ceiling light fixture, about 12" to 14" across, is usually enough in a standard hallway.

What size flush mount do I need?

Add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number in inches. A 10 x 12 ft room takes a fixture about 22" across. If the room is long or the number comes out large, two smaller lights spaced evenly light it better than one big one.

What's the best low profile ceiling light for a low ceiling?

Look for a fixture that sits only a few inches deep, often an LED model. Flat ceiling lights with built-in LEDs are among the slimmest, which helps in basements and older homes. Check the height spec in the listing before you buy.
