About Ceiling Lights

A good ceiling light gives the whole room its everyday light, and over a dining table or island it can be the centerpiece. Start with the ceiling height and what's underneath. Low ceilings need a fixture that sits tight to the ceiling. Taller ceilings, dining tables and kitchen islands leave room for chandeliers and pendants that hang down.

Types of ceiling lights

  • Chandeliers The statement piece over a dining table, in an entry or in a two-story room. Multiple arms or tiers spread light and sparkle.
  • Pendant Lights A single shade on a cord, rod or chain. Hang one over a small table or reading spot, or run several in a row.
  • Ceiling Mounted Lights Flush and semi-flush mounts. The everyday light for bedrooms, hallways, kitchens and living rooms, and the answer for low ceilings.
  • Linear Ceiling Lights Long, narrow fixtures that spread light evenly over a long table or a kitchen island.
  • Island Lights Pendants and linear fixtures sized for kitchen islands, hung 30" to 36" above the counter for task light where you prep.

How to choose a ceiling light

  • Ceiling height Under 8 ft, choose a flush mount. At 8 ft either works. A flush mount is the safe choice in halls, entries and anywhere people walk under it. A semi-flush with a short drop suits bedrooms, kitchens and living rooms. From 9 ft up, semi-flush mounts, pendants and chandeliers all work.
  • Size Size the fixture to the room, or to the table or island below it. The chart below gives the numbers.
  • Light quality Frosted and opal glass spread soft light; clear glass shows the bulb and adds sparkle. Use 2700K to 3000K (warm to soft white) for living spaces.
  • Dimmers One fixture can go from bright cleaning light to a low evening glow. Put the main ceiling light on a dimmer, if the fixture is dimmable.

Ceiling light size chart

Where it hangs How to size it Example
Center of a room Room length + width in feet = diameter in inches 12 x 14 ft room: about 26"
Over a dining table About 12" narrower than the table 42" round table: up to 30"
Height over a table Bottom 30" to 34" above the tabletop, 8 ft ceiling Add about 3" per extra foot of ceiling
Over an island 30" to 36" above the counter Pendants about 24" to 30" apart
Ceiling under 8 ft Flush mount Hallways, bedrooms, closets
Ceiling 8 to 9 ft Flush, or semi-flush with a short drop Flush in halls and entries; semi-flush in bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms

Ceiling light specs explained

  • Integrated LED or bulbs Integrated LED fixtures have the light source built in and are rated for tens of thousands of hours. When the LED fails, you usually replace the whole fixture. Bulb fixtures let you choose the brightness and color yourself.
  • Lumens Brightness. A living room needs roughly 10 to 20 lumens per square foot in total, about 1,500 to 3,000 lumens for a 150 sq ft room, spread across all its lights.
  • Color temperature 2700K is warm, 3000K soft white, 4000K crisp. Keep the main lights in a room close in color so the light looks even. Warm accent lamps can run a little lower.
  • Damp rated The minimum over a tub or shower, and right for covered porches. Choose wet rated if shower spray will hit the fixture. Chandeliers, pendants and other hanging lights can't go within 3 ft sideways or 8 ft up from a tub rim or shower threshold.
  • Dimmable Check the fixture and the dimmer are compatible so LEDs dim smoothly.
  • Sloped ceilings Look for a fixture with a swivel canopy so it hangs straight.

Ceiling light questions

What ceiling light is best for a living room?

It depends on the ceiling. Under 8 ft, a wide flush mount on a dimmer gives even light without crowding headroom; at 8 ft, a semi-flush with a short drop works too. With a taller ceiling, a chandelier or a large pendant becomes the centerpiece.

Either way, add lamps and wall lights. A living room lit only from the ceiling feels flat at night.

How big should a ceiling light be?

Add the room's length and width in feet. The total, in inches, is a good fixture diameter. A 12 x 14 ft room takes a fixture about 26" across. In a room with a high ceiling, go a little larger so the fixture doesn't look lost.

How high should a chandelier hang over a table?

Hang the bottom of the chandelier 30" to 34" above the tabletop on an 8 ft ceiling, and add about 3" for every extra foot of ceiling height. Keep it at least 12" narrower than the table so it stays in proportion and clear of the edges.

How far apart should island pendants be?

Hang pendants about 30" to 36" above the counter. Space them so each lights its own stretch of the island, usually about 24" to 30" apart, with at least 6" between the end pendants and the edge of the island.

What's the difference between flush mount and semi-flush mount?

A flush mount sits tight against the ceiling, the right choice under 8 ft. A semi-flush mount hangs a few inches down on a short stem and spreads light wider. At 8 ft either works: choose a flush mount where people walk under it, such as halls and entries, and a semi-flush with a short drop elsewhere. From 9 ft up, a semi-flush suits most rooms.

How many ceiling lights does a room need?

One centered fixture lights most rooms up to about 12 x 12 ft. Larger or long rooms light more evenly with two fixtures, or one ceiling light plus lamps and sconces. Put the main light on a dimmer so the room works for both bright tasks and quiet evenings.
