Hubbardton Forge History

George Chandler and Reed Hampton met at the University of Vermont their senior year in a sculpting class. The two founded Hubbardton Forge in 1974 in a 19th barn in the Green Mountains of Vermont. With a focus on the abandoned art of blacksmithing, Chandler and Hampton set out to create functional art, and in 1976 unveiled their first product line, which included: candleholders, fireplace screens, and other accessories. The hand-forged items were recognized for their “simplicity and integrity”, two important characteristics that remain in the product line today. The two discovered their knack for lighting when they were asked to produce a lamp, and subsequently 1000 pieces were ordered. The first employee was hired in 1985, and the company was eventually moved into a much larger shop in the current time where Hubbardton Forge resides, Castleton, Vermont. Throughout the late 90’s and early 00’s many of the recognizable Hubbardton Forge fixtures were designed and produced, followed by the introduction of exterior lights forged from aluminum in 2002. In 2003 the first designer was hired, up until that point George Chandler had been the sole designer. In 2010 Hubbardton Forge partnered with Lineage Capital, as Chandler and Hampton began their transition out of the business. In the subsequent years, a sales force was hired and the Limited Lifetime Warranty was introduced for all Hubbardton Forge products. In 2013 Bunker Hill Capital acquired Hubbardton Forge as they company continues to grow and remains one of the very few companies keeping manufacturing jobs in the United States. The forge in Castleton, Vermont employs over 200 people and continues to produce American made, high quality light fixtures, that are designed with the “simplicity and integrity” characteristics from over 40 years ago.
