We know that finding the right size light is one of the most challenging aspects of shopping for lighting. That is why we are taking the guesswork out of choosing the right size for your ceiling lights. We will walk you through how to use the dimensions and measurements of your space to make sure your light isn’t too small or too big.
Determine Your Ceiling Height
First you will want to determine the height of your ceiling. This will help you decide if you need a fixture that sits close to the ceiling or hangs down. If your ceiling is 8 feet or less, opt for a flush mount or semi flush mount. Pendants and chandeliers will work in spaces that have ceilings that are higher than 8 feet. This will allow for enough clearance so that no one will hit their head while walking.
Calculate the Diameter of the Fixture
Make note of the room’s height, length and width. To figure out the right size diameter of a light fixture for your space, take the length and width of the room (in feet) and add them together. Take that total and swap the feet for inches (20 feet becomes 20 inches). That number will be the ideal diameter for your fixture. This calculation works for ceiling lights that are hanging in a living room, foyer or bedroom.
DIAMETER = ROOM LENGTH + WIDTH
FEET → INCHES
HEIGHT = 9′, LENGTH = 12′, WIDTH = 10′
L + W = 10 + 12 = 22′ → 22″
Calculate the Height of the Fixture
To determine the right size height of your ceiling light, begin with the height of your ceiling. Multiply the height by 2.5” – 3” per foot. Take that value and change feet for inches, and this will be the range for the ideal height of the fixture.
CEILING HEIGHT x 2.5″ − 3″
FEET → INCHES
CEILING HEIGHT = 10′
10′ x 2.5″ – 3″ = 25″ – 30″
Ceiling Light Over a Table
When shopping for a ceiling light over a table, the diameter of the fixture should measure approximately 1 foot less than the width of the table. Ceiling lights should be centered directly over the table and hang about 30 to 34 inches above the table.
Ceiling Lights Over a Kitchen Island or Bar
Pendant lights work perfectly over a kitchen island. Follow these steps to determine how many and what size pendants to buy.
1. Measure to determine the width (not length) of the island or bar in inches.
2. Take that number and subtract 12 inches.
3. The number will be the maximum diameter of the pendant.
4. Plan to space each pendant about 16″ apart, and consider the length of the island to determine how many will fit.
SURFACE WIDTH − 12″
= MAXIMUM DIAMETER
SURFACE WIDTH = 36″
36″ − 12″ = 24″ = MAX. DIAMETER
