Deciding which ceiling fan is right for your space is no easy choice. You are probably wondering what size it should be and how low it should hang from the ceiling. You also want to know if the fan comes with a light kit or can be used outdoors. Read on below for the answers to the most commonly asked questions about buying a ceiling fan.
The size of your ceiling fan will depend on the size of the room. These guidelines will help you with how to choose the right size ceiling fan.
♦ For small spaces such as breakfast nooks or utility rooms, look for a fan with a blade span of 29″ to 36″.
♦ In bedrooms, kitchens and dining rooms, the blade span should fall in the 42″ to 48″ range.
♦ For larger rooms like master bedrooms and family rooms, aim for a blade span of 52″ to 56″.
Flush mount and hugger fans should be used for rooms with low ceilings (shorter than 8 ft).
♦ The ideal height from the floor up to the blade is around 8 ft or so.
♦ A 9-foot ceiling should use a 6-inch down rod. For every additional foot, add 6 more inches to the down rod.
♦ Most fans will come with different size down rods so the height can be adjusted based on your ceiling height. Reference the chart at the bottom of this page for suggested down rod sizes.
If you’re looking for a fan with a light, make sure it has a compatible light kit. If you’re shopping for an outdoor ceiling fan, be sure it’s wet-rated to withstand the elements of nature.
♦ Blade pitch is the angle of the fan’s blade measured in degrees. It influences how much air is moved around by the fan.
♦ The higher the blade pitch, the more air the fan will move around.
♦ Look for a fan between 12 and 15 degrees, which is the optimal range for blade pitch. The majority of our fans fall within this range.
