Lamps come in all different sizes and shapes. The best part about lamps is that they’re versatile! You can easily pick them up and move them into a different space. Lamps are an inexpensive way to constantly stay on top of trendy décor and style, while bringing personality to the room. Remember that it is always a good idea to use layered light to easily accommodate the mood change. Lamps are a key part of the layering process. Accent lamps, buffet lamps, and Tiffany lamps cast a soft ambient light and are typically used for decorative purposes. Table lamps, both functional and aesthetically pleasing can be used in any room in the house. More often than none the main purpose of the desk lamp is to provide a significant amount of light so people can perform hobbies or tasks but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a stylish lamp to match your décor. Floor lamps can be arranged in a living room or bedroom to emphasize elements of interior design. The sculptural design of the lamp itself can bring elegance to the room and the light can provide illumination needed to either perform tasks or just to enjoy the room. Arc lamp have an arc shaped frame which adds dimension and casts direct light, unlike floor lamps, which stand up straight and offer light outward. Torchiere lamps, also referred to as up-lights cast illumination upwards toward the ceiling. This type of lighting bounces off of the walls and ceilings, creating a balance in the room. And pharmacy lamps are adjustable and versatile with key-lock joints.

- How much light do I need?
It’s completely up to you. But use this formula to determine the suggested light. Multiply the length times the width of the room then multiply that number times 1.5 and you will have the suggested wattage. Larger lamps are usually over 27 inches and work best on low tables and can work with 3-way bulbs up to 250 watts. Medium sized lamps typically are 20 inches to 27 inches and use a 150-watt bulb. Smaller lamps are no taller than 20 inches and take a 70 to 100 watt bulb. But remember you should always layer the light in the room, so don’t devote all the required wattage to lamps. And pairing lamps is always an option.
- Where to place it?
Desk lamps should be placed at a 90-degree angle to your window and not directly below your ceiling light, which prevents glare and creates contrasts. You also don’t want your hands to create shadows, so place the lamp no more than 39 inches from the object to be illuminated. Floor lamps, torchiere lamps, and arc lamps can be placed behind or next to sofas, beds, or tables. Accent lamps and buffet lamps are typically used for decorative purposes and would work well on a foyer console, kitchen hutch, or even a desk or shelf. Table lamps and tiffany lamps work well on coffee tables, bedside tables, and bureaus.
- What type of style should I consider?
It depends what you’re going for and what you’re working with. First determine your style, contemporary and traditional are on two ends of the spectrum and create completely different feels. Consider the colors and fabrics you are working with in the room and incorporate that into your search. Fabrics and linens typically cast a warm organic feel whereas glass can bring an elegant, classy feel to the room. The base of the lamp is important to the style choice as well. For a more traditional style, brass is typically used but for modern the bases have chrome finishes.

What is the primary purpose of the lamp? If you are looking for something to help you complete tasks then consider a desk lamp with an incandescent bulb. If you are looking for something more decorative, try an accent lamp or buffet lamp with tungsten-halogen light. Floor lamps and arc lamps generally have CFL bulbs, which produce a light comparable to incandescent and is used for task, ambient, or general lighting. Table lamps generally produce a warm color, which isn’t ideal for reading but gives a great general light and often bounces off of walls, producing a soft pleasant color.
