The cornerstone for Lamps.com was laid nearly a century ago, when in 1914 Harry Horn took over his uncle's gas mantle store on South Street in Philadelphia. Adapting to the changing times, Horn quickly made the switch from gas to electricity and changed the name of his store to Harry Horn Electric Supply. For more than 80 years, Harry Horn thrived, becoming the best-known electrical supply house in the city. In 1996 Michael Kurland, the third generation owner and Harry Horn's grandson, refashioned the business into an upscale lighting showroom and relocated to Philadelphia's Old City neighborhood. There, he opened Arch Street Lighting, which exists today as one of the region's premier lighting showrooms. Arch Street Lighting carried on with the principles of integrity, honesty, professional service and fair prices that had been the core of their business for over eight decades.

Fourteen years later, it was time to evolve once more. Recognizing the changing landscape of the lighting world and retailing in general, the decision was made to bring Arch Street Lighting's selection of world class lighting, top notch customer service and dedication to fair prices to the internet. Although there were plenty of online lighting stores at the time, their attitudes were more that of a big box store than of an intimate lighting showroom.
